The API 312 has long been known as one of the most important preamps in recording history. In 2019, API Audio celebrated its 50th anniversary with a limited edition run of the mic pre, but in 2020, the brand is bringing the 500 Series module back to regular production.
This standard production version of the API 312 is based on the original design of company co-founder Saul Walker. The fully discrete circuit design uses 2520 op-amps and proprietary AP2516 input transformers to get that familiar sound of 1970s American rock records with lots of warmth. Following in the footsteps of the limited run of the 50th Anniversary Edition, the new API 312 features a beautiful vintage style analog VU meter, in addition to a 20 dB pad switch and peak LED. The 500 Series module also offers a maximum 69 dB of gain.
